This flu season, and battling the arrival of the novel H1N1 virus, has been a challenge akin to swimming upstream, banging your head against the wall, and all euphemisms for trying to accomplish something and not getting very far.
But despite the tragedies and the widespread anguish over shortages of the vaccine, we have experienced, there is a glimmer of good news for which we can be thankful on this holiday weekend.
NorthBay Healthcare received enough vaccine to begin vaccinating patients in our primary care clinics and extending our outreach to all residents of Solano County that want to be vaccinated.
Free drive-through clinics were conducted Nov. 25 at three locations - Fairfield, Green Valley and Vacaville. And we will continue to offer vaccination clinics through our Center for Primary Care's three locations and in conjunction with Solano Public Health as vaccine trickles in. Keep checking NorthBay.org for current vaccination information.
Those who use our primary care clinics can always call our care team there.
I encourage those who are eligible to take advantage of the nasal flu mist. This is a perfectly acceptable vaccine and possible even better than the injection. (I took it this year, as did my wife and children.) This is an attenuated virus, and it makes your body mount an immune response equal to or greater than the shot.
If you have a normal immune system, the mist is perfectly safe.
