Recalled vaccine no threat to local children

A national recall of H1N1 vaccine for very young children spurred NorthBay Healthcare officials to pull the syringes in question out of a free flu clinic in Vacaville Tuesday, while reassuring parents that children who did receive inoculations are in no danger.

A non-safety, voluntary recall of some of the H1N1 influenza vaccine produced by Sanofi Pasteur Inc. represents only a fraction of the nearly 3,000 doses administered during recent flu clinics in Vacaville and Fairfield, according to Daman Mott, director of infection control.

New Rules for Visitors to Two Local Hospitals

To protect patients and young visitors from the spread of the H1N1 flu, beginning Tuesday, October 27, NorthBay Healthcare will no longer allow non-patient visitors and family members under the age of 16 inside its hospitals in Vacaville and Fairfield.

"This will be inconvenient for some families, and perhaps frustrating," acknowledged Dr. Don Denmark, vice president of Medical Affairs for NorthBay Healthcare. "But we have to put the safety of the patients first, and the safety of those who will be visiting a facility that has a growing number of patients with the flu."

Adult Vaccine Shortage Stalls Clinics

NorthBay Center for Primary Care has suspended its seasonal flu vaccination program due to an unexpected shortage of vaccine. The Center can no longer offer drive-through or walk-in flu shot clinics for adults.

"We are pleased to still be able to offer walk-in flu shots for established pediatric patients who have received the vaccine in the past," noted Shannon Lockrem, who manages the Center for Primary Care's three locations in northern Solano County. "If your child has never had a flu shot, but would like one, they will need to see their doctor for a brief screening prior to receiving the vaccine."

Walk-in flu clinic hours are 9 a.m. to noon. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Center for Primary Care was advised today (Oct. 13) that it may not receive another shipment of vaccine until the end of November. The vaccine shortage is the result of the unprecedented and unexpected demand in the need for H1N1 vaccine, experts say. Labs that normally produce seasonal flu vaccine have switched to producing H1N1 vaccine.
