Preventing Food Contamination

You have probably read about the recent outbreak of Listeria in cantaloupes and asked how to keep yourself safe. The latest melon brands to have been found to contain the Listeria is Rocky Ford brand, and possibly those sold by Jensen Farms. However part of the problem is that not all melons have an identifying sticker noting where it originated.

That makes it tough for consumers like us to know which ones are safe and which ones are not safe. Check your refrigerator for the noted brands, and also check to see if you have any cut-up melon from an unknown source. Dispose of the contaminated melons.

Symptoms of Listeria-related illness include diarrhea and other stomach or intestinal symptoms which can progress to flu-like symptoms such as fever, aches in muscles, headache, stiff neck, convulsions and vertigo.

Other healthy food preparation habits include washing all melons in non-toxic soap, rinsing well with water and drying with a paper towel or clean cloth. Never use the same cutting board used for raw meats. It is best to use separate surfaces when preparing meats and vegetables or fruits. Refrigerate unused foods to prevent bacteria from multiplying. Wash your hands frequently.

If you think you have been exposed to the contaminated melons and are experiencing symptoms, it is important to contact your health care provider.

However, do not stop consuming fresh fruits and vegetables as they are very good for your health. Just make sure you wash them well, and avoid the suspicious melons until the FDA or CDC gives the all clear signal.
