October is breast cancer awareness month. Did you know there is an app for almost everything? You can even find an app with some "hawt" (the new expression for handsome) guys reminding us and showing us women how to do a monthly breast exam.
It is a funny app, but not for the faint of heart! Go check it out at http://rethinkbreastcancer.com/
It is important that women of all ages do monthly breast self-exams. Although, most health care providers do not promote breast self-exams for women in their 20s, it is a good idea to become familiar with yourself, especially by performing breast self- exams.
Then, beginning for women in their 40s, it is recommended to get a baseline mammogram, then one every year or two, or as recommended by your health care provider. Still monthly breast self-exams are essential and very important. So why is this so important if we have a yearly mammogram? Sometimes mammograms do not show every type of breast cancer, and many lumps are frequently found by a breast self-exam.
The monthly exam is very easy, and the more often you do it, the more you become familiar with what is normal and what is not normal. For more information, you may discuss it with your health care provider.
