Team NorthBay has been busy hosting rides for beginners and intermediate riders.
Other cycling groups host group rides but Team NorthBay is the only local group that offers rides for beginner cyclists.
Monticello offers rides for novice riders but not for the rank beginner. Our group welcomes everyone no matter what your fitness level or type of bike you are riding. Many of the participants can not be described as fit (yet) and some ride on balloon tire cruiser or heavy department store bikes.
Sunday beginner/intermediate rides
The beginner rides are being led by Dr. Ehsan Shahmir on many Sunday mornings. The rides have been both in Vacaville and Davis. He also leads an intermediate ride prior to the beginner ride. The intermediate riders show up around 8 a.m. for a prompt 8:30 a.m. start and the beginner riders show up no later than 10:15 a.m. for a prompt 10:30 a.m. start. If you wish to join either of these rides, sign up to receive email notifications from Dr. Shahmir by contacting him, at shahmir56@gmail.com.
Saturday novice/intermediate rides
Mercille Locke has continued to lead rides on many Saturday mornings. The rides are for novice to intermediate cyclists. Individuals wanting to ride with Mercille should be able to complete a 30 mile ride in under three hours with stops. Her pace is an average of under 15mph. A typical ride might take you to Winters for a snack or even a light meal. Sometimes they tackle Cantelow hill. Beginning soon Mike Rios will be assisting Mercille so we can have a ride every Saturday morning. To get more information on these rides, sign up to receive email notifications from Mercille at MLocke@northbay.org.
New Fourth Wednesday beginner/intermediate ride
Announcing a new monthly ride with a new ride leader: yours truly. I am now a part of NorthBay's Shared Governance and will be at the NorthBay Green Valley Administrative Center all day every fourth Wednesday. So I am planning to lead a ride leaving from GVAC at 4:30 every month on that day. It will be a beginner ride. Anyone regardless of fitness level or type of bike is welcome to ride. This location is ideally located for a beginner ride with many very quiet residential streets and bike paths. The first ride will be Feb. 22. Beginning March 28, after the clocks spring forward giving us one additional hour of sunlight, there will be a ride following the beginners ride leaving at 6 p.m. This ride will be a novice/intermediate ride and will do a hill climb on Rockville Road. To get information on this ride, contact me to be added to the email list to receive updates at Pgarner@northbay.org.
Basic Bicycle Repair Clinic
Announcing a basic flat tire repair and bicycle maintenance clinic. Ray's Bicycle Shop in Vacaville is hosting a special free evening clinic at the shop, 400 Main St. The primary objective of the clinic is to empower you to be able to repair a flat tire when it occurs while out on a ride. Other subjects to include how to easily keep your bike properly and safely maintained. Please RSVP to me before Friday, Feb. 10, if you plan to attend the Clinic, which is 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15. Attendees will need to bring a wheel from their bike as well as tire levers. If you do not have tire levers you need them and can purchase them from Ray's. (BTW, everything in the store will be 20 percent off just for us during this event). If your wheel requires a wrench to remove the wheel (true for most cruiser bikes) it is recommended that you carry a wrench for this purpose during your rides. We will provide refreshments.
Tour de Cure is May 6
Twenty five riders have signed up to ride as Team NorthBay in the Napa Valley Tour de Cure. If you are planning on signing up I strongly recommend doing so now to avoid being frozen out of the ride. The pace for registration is much higher this year and the ride probably will fill up well in advance. Save $15 off the registration fee by signing up before Feb. 18. If you can't ride, consider signing up to volunteer. Contact me for more information. You can also come to the flat tire repair clinic to get more info and to sign up on Feb. 15.
